Town Stuff

A few years ago, the piece of land just north of the 80 acres went up for sale.  I wanted it like anything because the “hump” at the upper end is higher than ours, has the only post oak nearby, some lovely wild plum trees along the highway, additional old trees and plants closely related to our dry woods area–and wildlife uses all this a lot–a flatter area near the cross highway–that would be good for playing fields, picnic pavilions, parking, etc, and as far as the dry creek, there’s a strip of trees (including old oaks) and bushes the are used by birds and other wildlife as a corridor.   And nesting site for black vultures (they make a nest burrow in brush, in this case under roughleaf dogwood bushes.)

But I didn’t have the the money to buy it or the energy to do all the work it would take to manage it for wildlife, so I have lived in some anxiety about what would border our 80.  Recently it’s looked like we’d be getting a permanent batch concrete plant.  A lot of us showed up at city hall last night to grump about that.  A concrete business not to known for being environmentally friendly (to say the least) had an application in with the state agency that in TX is supposed to supervise air quality.   Some had already sent in protests; others hadn’t yet.  Including me, given the computer difficulties of the past week.  So today, word arrived (with loud yells of glee by the first people to spread it) that the concrete company had withdrawn its application upon finding out that an elementary school was going in across the road.  YAY!

So, for at least a little while, I don’t have to worry about the dust, the noise, the heavy traffic.I still don’t have the money to buy it and create the county/city park I’d like to have on this end of the county and city when I’m gone…but maybe someone else will do something less destructive with it than a concrete plant.

  1. Would the Nature Conservancy be interested in buying it with the possibility of eventually merging your 80 acres with it?
