Great Blue Heron, for instance, has been seen on the place every year, but was not photographed until 2005. Some species not photographed may never be: they appear only briefly and/or occasionally during migration (American White Pelican, Whooping Crane), are shy (Wild Turkey, Yellow-billed Cuckoo), are too fast to photograph with our equipment (Barn Swallow, Peregrine Falcon), or are nocturnal (Owls, Nightjars.) Photographs are unequal in quality--"grab" shots used to document presence are poorer than shots taken using a tripod near water or feeding stations. For species of concern, especially those reproducing onsite, such as the Painted Bunting, we attempt to photograph adults of both sexes and juveniles. No attempt is made to photograph active nests.
