{"id":753,"date":"2021-04-05T22:37:41","date_gmt":"2021-04-06T03:37:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/?p=753"},"modified":"2021-04-05T22:37:41","modified_gmt":"2021-04-06T03:37:41","slug":"flower-flower-in-the-field","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/index.php\/2021\/04\/05\/flower-flower-in-the-field\/","title":{"rendered":"Flower, Flower, in the field&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last spring we discovered a new-to-us non-native flower growing on the place, several patches of Scarlet Pimpernel (which in Texas look orange, not scarlet, but do have striking magenta down near the ovary.\u00a0\u00a0 It looked like this:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-754\" src=\"http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Scarlet-pimpernel05-19-2020-B.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"303\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Scarlet-pimpernel05-19-2020-B.jpg 387w, http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Scarlet-pimpernel05-19-2020-B-258x300.jpg 258w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 303px) 100vw, 303px\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-755\" src=\"http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Scarlet-pimpernel-5-19-2020A.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"302\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Scarlet-pimpernel-5-19-2020A.jpg 384w, http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Scarlet-pimpernel-5-19-2020A-256x300.jpg 256w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 302px) 100vw, 302px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Today, R- found a similar looking flower on a different-looking plant, and so far we&#8217;re uncertain of the correct ID, because although it&#8217;s superficially similar in flower structure, it&#8217;s not exactly the same, and the plant looks completely different, with deeply cut leaves rather than entire leaves, as seen on the Scarlet Pimpernel.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-756\" src=\"http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/UID-red-geranium-wildflower-04-05-2021.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"326\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/UID-red-geranium-wildflower-04-05-2021.jpg 424w, http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/UID-red-geranium-wildflower-04-05-2021-283x300.jpg 283w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 326px) 100vw, 326px\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-757\" src=\"http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Red-geranium-wildflower-closeup-4-05-2021.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"284\" height=\"344\" srcset=\"http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Red-geranium-wildflower-closeup-4-05-2021.jpg 371w, http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Red-geranium-wildflower-closeup-4-05-2021-247x300.jpg 247w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 284px) 100vw, 284px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Scarlet Pimpernel grew on soil near the fence of the construction yard, where the washwater from their power-washing machinery spreads.\u00a0 Most of the plants have some bare soil around them.\u00a0 The new, deeper red, flower grows in more natural soil, farther away from the construction company fence, among other native forbs and grasses.\u00a0 The new flowers, photographed with R-&#8216;s small camera in situ, look much paler, but the color of the single one (my camera) is what the eye sees.<\/p>\n<p>From my first field guide search, and several online searches, the new one is in the Geranium family, and if the flower were larger (an inch across instead of more like 1 cm) I&#8217;d bet on &#8220;Bloody Geranium,&#8221;
