{"id":600,"date":"2020-11-19T17:17:22","date_gmt":"2020-11-19T23:17:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/?p=600"},"modified":"2020-11-19T18:43:05","modified_gmt":"2020-11-20T00:43:05","slug":"a-good-bad-odd-sad-happy-medley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/index.php\/2020\/11\/19\/a-good-bad-odd-sad-happy-medley\/","title":{"rendered":"A Good\/Bad\/Odd\/Sad\/Happy Medley"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I didn&#8217;t feel great yesterday evening, so skipped the choir Zoom meeting and went to bed.\u00a0 And this morning&#8230;.a migraine.\u00a0 Overnight clouds had moved in and a wind from the south.\u00a0 After\u00a0 a couple of hours trying to argue myself into wellness (waste of time and I know it, but often can&#8217;t act on it with a migraine), I gave in, took the meds, went back to bed, and covered my eyes with black cloth.\u00a0 Two hours later I was better, and a three hours after that I was able to get on Rags and ride a short calm ride in the north horse lot.<\/p>\n<p>I worked on getting him to walk a straight line,\u00a0 make a small circle both ways, leg yield both ways (to the right, pretty easy; to the left, not so much),\u00a0 turn on the haunches (unsuccessful) and forehand (successful) both ways,\u00a0 &#8220;whoa&#8221; without hesitation,\u00a0 stand still after stopping, and then start promptly when cued,\u00a0 simple stuff like that.\u00a0\u00a0 Pleased with myself for riding on a migraine day (trusting that the migraine really was gone) and happy with Rags&#8217; response to the 4th day in a row under saddle.\u00a0\u00a0 He would rather not, but he is easily food motivated and the carrot bits he gets have overcome his reluctance.<\/p>\n<p>The odd: yesterday while walking the fence, R- saw a Northern Caracara (not that unusual anymore) and it vocalized.\u00a0 They croak.\u00a0\u00a0 They&#8217;re a very handsome bird, impressive size and interesting coloring.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve seen them but never heard one; they&#8217;re usually silent.\u00a0 The odd today was not seeing *anything*\u00a0 of note (animal, bird, new plant) while walking the fence, he said.<\/p>\n<p>His younger brother and wife both had Covid in late June\/early July.\u00a0 Melissa died of it.\u00a0\u00a0 They lived in the Houston area.\u00a0 Now his older brother and wife have Covid.\u00a0 They live in Kansas.\u00a0\u00a0 They attend a church that doesn&#8217;t do virtual services.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know if they&#8217;ve been good about wearing masks or not.\u00a0 I know R- talked to his older brother about Covid when the younger one was sick, but apparently it didn&#8217;t stick.\u00a0 Biting my tongue, here.\u00a0\u00a0 Both brothers have engineering degrees from Texas A&amp;M.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s sad when people who have the education to know that science matters&#8230;that experts may indeed be expert in something they aren&#8217;t&#8230;make potentially deadly decisions on the basis of politically motivated lies.\u00a0 It&#8217;s sad and infuriating when the leadership in groups choose to ignore the advice NOT to meet in person and ensure that their own members will get sick.<\/p>\n<p>I had planned to do more editing on NewBook today, but the migraine ate my morning and the horses ate my afternoon.\u00a0 Tomorrow, while R- is grocery shopping, then.\u00a0\u00a0 I&#8217;ve made some (still mental) changes in Chapter 2 that will fix the problems in C-3 and also some others down the line (where C-2-3 are recent history.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-601\" src=\"http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/RidingRags-11-18-2020-giving-withers-scratch.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"401\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/RidingRags-11-18-2020-giving-withers-scratch.jpg 401w, http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/RidingRags-11-18-2020-giving-withers-scratch-267x300.jpg 267w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 401px) 100vw, 401px\" \/>Giving Rags a scritch on the withers for being good.\u00a0 11\/18\/2020<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-603\" src=\"http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/RidingRags-11-18-2020-upslope-level.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/RidingRags-11-18-2020-upslope-level.jpg 450w, http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/RidingRags-11-18-2020-upslope-level-300x242.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/>Level feet!\u00a0 (Mine)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-602\" src=\"http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/RidingRags-11-18-2020-unfortunate.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/RidingRags-11-18-2020-unfortunate.jpg 450w, http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/RidingRags-11-18-2020-unfortunate-300x234.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/> Rags startled, and I stiffened into &#8220;defensive seat&#8221;.\u00a0 He had spotted a fallen deer feeder.\u00a0 Notice his head is higher than his usual &#8220;poll at or below withers.&#8221;\u00a0 It&#8217;s clear horse and I are not in accord, which means the rider screwed up, this time over-reacting to a minor startle.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been dumped when what I thought was going to be a minor startle turned into whirling, rearing, bolting (on a much larger horse) and I re-broke a rib I&#8217;d broken less than a decade before&#8230;and nearly dumped multiple times by horses with a really big &#8220;shy&#8221;&#8230;but that&#8217;s just an excuse.<\/p>\n<p>Rides will alternate or at least vary between &#8220;schooling&#8221;
