{"id":566,"date":"2020-11-06T09:04:34","date_gmt":"2020-11-06T15:04:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/?p=566"},"modified":"2020-11-06T09:04:34","modified_gmt":"2020-11-06T15:04:34","slug":"seasons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/elizabethmoon.com\/blog\/index.php\/2020\/11\/06\/seasons\/","title":{"rendered":"Seasons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>First week of November: our trees and bushes are changing color.\u00a0 Last week we began noticing the glowing green of leaves losing some of their chlorophyll&#8230;sun shining through, and not just on, them. But this morning I walked out into a display of yellow: the ash trees, the bois d&#8217;arc trees, the western soapberries&#8230;bright buttery yellow leaves replacing the green.\u00a0 Not *all* of them yet, but definitely enough to notice.\u00a0 Virginia creeper and poison ivy are turning red.\u00a0 The\u00a0 The oaks won&#8217;t finish their change for another several weeks, and the darkest red of them peak in December, but they&#8217;ve started.\u00a0 The front yard &#8220;big&#8221; oak has spots here and there of yellow leaves with green veins.\u00a0 It ranges from orange to yellow when it&#8217;s completely changed.\u00a0 The narrow red oak now has some orange leaves that will be burgundy at the end.\u00a0 Some bur oaks put out leaves in bright yellow and even red&#8211;in some years, at least&#8211;though they usually stick to dull gold or tan before dropping their very large, stiff leaves.\u00a0\u00a0 Backyard oaks (all orange to red)\u00a0 are showing small\u00a0 puffs of color at the ends of some limbs.\u00a0 Pecans have brown-spotted deep gold leaves.\u00a0 We have two maples&#8230;a Caddo maple in the front yard now turning a mottled dirty olive\/tan that will be a clear yellow, and a big-tooth maple in back that produces small leaves with multiple colors&#8230;green, yellow, orange, red all on one leaf.\u00a0 It&#8217;s still green, though.\u00a0 Crepe myrtles are a yellow-orange at the moment.\u00a0 Cedar elms look mostly dull but the first &#8220;golden coins&#8221; are starting to show (and quickly fall.)\u00a0\u00a0 They&#8217;ve been looking dull for a week at least.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First week of November: our trees and bushes are changing color.\u00a0 Last week we began noticing the glowing green of leaves losing some of their chlorophyll&#8230;sun shining through, and not just on, them.
